Freeganism?

I don't know how many of you out there watch Oprah, but yesterday on her show she explored the world of Freegans.

What is a Freegan you ask?
According to Oprah's website, "This growing grassroots subculture is made of people who have decided to live outside consumer society. Freegans say our culture's emphasis on buying the newest products—and throwing away perfectly fine older things—is a waste of the world's resources. Instead, they focus on buying less and use only what they need. One of the main ways freegans do this is by salvaging food and other goods from the trash."

Yes, you read that correctly...the trash! Freegans take "trash tours" throughout cities finding perfectly packaged foods and fresh fruits and vegetables that are being thrown out. Many set their sights on grocery story dumpsters. Apparently, grocery stores throw away THOUSANDS of perfectly good food that may not seem pleasing to the consumer because it has a slight imperfection or is past the expiration date by 1 day. Freegans will take huge bags and load up on tons of food for their own homes.

My question to you - could you ever be a freegan?

I must admit that I found this story fascinating, but don't think I could live this lifestyle. I am just as guilty as the next person for throwing out milk that has expired by a day or throwing old clothes in the trash because I'm too lazy to donate them. However, I just can't see myself digging around in the trash for my groceries...a piece of perfectly good furniture that has restoring potential, maybe. Food, no.

But get this...

Did you know that when you are at a restaurant and you get bread the restaurant throws out any bread that you do not eat? Or what about the fact that they throw away any bread that was given to you regardless of if you touched it or not. Now that is pretty wasteful!

I guess what I'm trying to say is I see the freegans point and respect them for what they do. It will make me think a little harder about not being so wasteful and eating all the bread at dinner! Pin It

Name that tune...

All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me

And after all this time
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes
Do not make the man
